Note Taking Challenges: Software

  • Search frequently fails to produce useful and relevant results.
  • A digital archive fails to assist in developing the kind of spatial memory that emerges from filling out a physical notebook.
  • It is difficult to articulate some ideas using digital tools, such as diagrams and timelines.
  • Unreliable platforms. It's difficult to adopt a workflow not knowing whether the platform will die tomorrow.
  • Using software is challenging because it resides in a very distracting environment (internet browser adjacent).
  • The requirement to always be connected to the internet.
  • Tagging, while useful, requires both an incredible amount of discipline to maintain, as well as good memory on the exact wording of tags.
  • Software fatigue. We are asked to learn simply too much software all the time.
